About Mediterranean Opera Studio & Festival

Our Vision

Mediterranean Opera Studio & Festival's vision and ethos for over a decade has been to establish a bridge between the great artists of a previous generation - their wealth of knowledge of the vocal arts (technique, style, musicality, acting) and our young rising generation of talented vocalists.  We promote and require a spirit of curiosity, collaboration and respect as each student navigates their personal artistic journey.  All we expect from our participants is the desire to know more, and a spirit of adventure in trying new things and taking them to your mentors back home to explore with them where this new information leads.  We bring the best teachers and coaches from around the world that you would otherwise likely not have exposure to and create a six week intensive. We aim to transform your vocalism through instruction and practice.

Who can participate

MOSF serves aspiring operatic performers, orchestra istrumentalists, aspiring conductors, studio pianists, and stage directors.  We do not have artists compete for roles or positions.  If you are accepted for a specific role, then you will sing that role if you arrive  with your part memorized and ready to perform.

As to age limits, you must be 18 or older.  Most participants are undergrad and grad students.  Some are on the cusp of a career.

Our Performances

In 2025 we will present: La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini, La Sonnambula by Vincenzo Bellini, and L'elisir d'amore by Gaetano Donizetti.

MOSF is NOT a pay-to-sing program. Performing is an essential part of learning and is only one aspect of our training. We believe that performing opens up the mind to new learning, but our main objective is your learning, not your performing.  All classes, rehearsals, coachings, voice lessons, and performances are open to the MOSF student body. Lessons and coachings of others can be quite enlightening, and in the spirit of great respect and camaraderie, we leave all classes open for anyone to attend.  You are required to be at every performance both to support colleagues, but to learn as well. We all sing in chorus on nights when we are not leads.

Expert Staff

Our staff for 2024 is composed of the leading voice and coaching staff from Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Frankfurt Oper, Teatro Massimo Bellini, Curtis Institute of Music, and Metropolitan Opera.

Operas Presented

In 2025 we will present: La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini, La Sonnambula by Vincenzo Bellini, and L'elisir d'amore by Gaetano Donizetti.  All operas are multicast.  We do not sell tickets for our shows. Singers will be assigned a principal role, but will also receive comprimario roles.  ALL SINGERS will be required to learn the chorus parts of all operas.

Cost

MOSF will cost singers $6,000 USD for the six-week period which runs from June 22nd (arrival) through August 4th (departure).  This includes all activities, including voice lessons, coachings, masterclasses, performances, transportation to and from airport on our scheduled shuttles, and tourism.  Abbreviated programs are also available for those who cannot stay 6 weeks.  They are $1200 per week.

Orchestra:  Instrumentalists are paid on a barter system.  You do not pay tuition in exchange for your playing, and will receive a $500 bonus at the end of the completed program.

Housing

Participants are housed at the Convitto INPS in Caltagirone.  This is a college dorm facility.  Each participant has a single room with bathroom.  Included are breakfast, lunch, and laundry. This is included in participation fee.

Should you want to opt for added comfort, you can also request housing at the NH Villa San Mauro Hotel at our discounted rate for the period (45 Euro + tax per day).  The hotel is equipped with pool, air conditioning, etc.
